Amber sits on top of git and Claude Code in a terminal interface written in Rust. Each Claude turn is checkpointed, so changes can be read as diffs and undone.
Described as a supervision and understanding layer over git and Claude Code. The screen has three panes: Claude, Changes and Diff.
Checkpoints are git-native snapshots taken around each Claude turn and stored under refs/amber. They never touch HEAD, the real index or the stash.
Claude runs through a small TypeScript bridge built on the Claude Agent SDK, speaking NDJSON over stdio, so Amber never handles a PTY. Since every turn is undoable, Claude runs with permissions bypassed.
Digests, decisions and review come from separate one-shot headless Claude calls.
